about

Selah (Hebrew: סֶלָה‎, also transliterated as selāh) is a word used frequently in the Hebrew Bible, often in the Psalms, and is a difficult concept to translate. It is probably either a liturgico-musical mark or an instruction on the reading of the text, something like "stop and listen". "Selah" can also be used to indicate that there is to be a musical interlude at that point in the Psalm. The Amplified Bible states Selah as "pause, and think of that".

Selah started in January 1998 with three 15 year olds who wanted to play like Nirvana. The only setbacks were that only one of them could really play, so it took a little while for things to really take off. You will not find any recordings of this early era on the internet. Ever. With the recruitment of two close friends, the band became a logical extension of a very close friendship borne out of a sleepy, uninspiring market town in deepest Lincolnshire. Selah was a unit, an entity, often at war with itself, but at heart, the closest friends imaginable. While contemporaries went to the pub, Selah made comedy videos, wrote songs, spawned endless in-jokes, smoked crafty cigarettes by the river, undertook absurd self-imposed tasks, dressed up and walked around town in the middle of the night, flyposted nonsense in the alleys of their hometown...

By late 1999, Selah were welcomed into the Peterborough DIY / hardcore scene and this began a reciprocal sharing of ideas. The hardcore kids learned that indie kids could rock with the best of them, and the indie kids grew up a little. So too did the sound, and songs became more complex. Selah refined themselves, or at least, as much as they ever would.

Gigs were pretty hit and miss. Part of the fun I suppose. With three guitarists, the loudest drummer in the world, and an always-animated bassist, often gigs and the songs within them showcased the nature of Selah as a bunch of kids all playing their favourite kinds of music - trouble was, it was all different kinds, and it was all at the same time. It was turn up or be drowned out. Some loved it, others did not.

In 2001 we reached the pinnacle. Working night shifts in a salad factory through June and July, we financed a trip to California, where through some sheer miracle we got to play on a radio station and play 4 or 5 shows, one of which was at the legendary 925 Gilman St in Berkeley.

Over the next couple of years, the band played around the Peterborough and Nottingham areas extensively, with trips over to Leeds to play shows and record with Mark Simms, as well as to Liverpool and Manchester. London was never a goal. We always joked that we'd played San Francisco before we'd played London...

We never got to be Nirvana, but it was a special time for us, and I'll always remember how the 6 years I spent in this band gave me the best memories of my life thus far. We've all gone to different places in our lives now, but this will always keep us united in some way.
